PREPARING FOR A HURRICANE
In Florida, it is always a good time to prepare for a hurricane.

If we have a hurricane threat...we will send out this information again.
In the event of a hurricane, you should have all/much of the following ready, as it pertains to you. The stores will be a mess if a hurricane is approaching so it is best to prepare now. The best thing to do is to pick up a few items each time you go to the store, so that you do not panic if time is running out.
If You Evacuate, You Should Also Take:
If you have never experienced a hurricane, please take note of some of these dos/don'ts.
Most of the following information comes from the Pensacola News Journal. They put out a Hurricane Preparedness guide every year.
IN THE EVENT THAT PENSACOLA WILL BE HIT BY A MAJOR STORM...
DOs!
-DO Park your vehicle against the garage door and keep the gas tank full (if you have a garage).
-DO Take out some cash from the ATM. ATMs don't work if the power goes out. Neither will gas pumps.
-DO Move furniture away from windows and doors.
-DO Take all pets indoors to shelter them from the storm.
-DO Store personal papers and irreplaceable documents in the highest point possible, in waterproof containers. Also, scan important docs and email to yourself.
-DO take pics of your belongings for your renter's insurance carrier.
-DO Let us know ASAP about and dead or dying tree limbs.
-DO In the event of a storm, fill bathtubs and sinks with water in case water supply is interrupted or contaminated. Also, fill gallon-sized storage bags with water and freeze them.
-DO Secure garden tools, patio furniture, awnings and grills (should be anchored or sheltered.) Loose items in yard = PROJECTILES.
-DO Elevate what you can off the floor and cover with plastic.
-DO Set the refrigerator on maximum cold; do not open unless necessary; keep a full stock of non perishable items and canned foods. (and a non-electric can opener!)
-DO Invest in a (battery or crank-operated) radio.
-DO Stay in a central room or on the downwind side of the house; move to another room as wind direction changes.
-DO Close all outdoor electrical outlets.
-DO Secure garage and porch doors.
-DO Have extra supplies ie) (food, water, paper plates, cutlery, pet food, and medicine on hand)
DON'Ts
-DO NOT Put tape on the windows. This only prevents some glass from flying and is a bit of an old wives tale. If a tree branch comes sailing through your window...tape won't stop it.
-DO NOT Stay in the house if you have been ordered to evacuate. If you are told to leave...there is good reason.
-DO NOT Leave doors or windows open in the event of a storm.
-DO NOT Drive around or walk around during a storm.
-DO NOT Wait until the last minute to prepare yourself and your family.
As a reminder...we DO NOT board our homes in the event of a hurricane. It does very little to help in the event of a catastrophic storm. Please call if you have any questions or concerns about any of this information.
Another good idea...
CALL TO CHECK ON YOUR RENTERS INSURANCE POLICIES! Find out what coverage you have for water and wind damage for your personal belongings. ADD US as "additional interest" if you have not done so already. (This is spelled out in your lease.) Once a storm gets close and/or is "named"...insurance agencies WILL NOT bind new policies, nor make changes. Do not wait until it is too late!!! (As a reminder...our insurance covers the structure...but not your belongings, if they are damaged.)
Stay safe and call us any time if you have questions related to hurricane preparations.
